So excited to be part of the VoxFest hosted by Deborah Latz. Having done several shows highlighting women writers both past and present, this is my latest take on the subject. The evening will include songs by Dorothy Fields, Mary Lou Williams, Billie Holiday, Doris Fisher, Kay Swift plus Fran Landesman and much more. Come for the songs, stay for the stories.

A smart musical cocktail that celebrates the coming together of East and West. Tales of Hollywood meets the Naked City.

LA Songwriter Mark Winkler will mix some choice new originals with Laura Nyro and the great American Songbook, then New York vocalist Mary Foster Conklin will add songs of beat poet Fran Landesman along with tunes by Matt Dennis and Joni Mitchell---and you can bet there will be a duet or two to top off the set. Mary is loathe to leave her downtown Manhattan digs for the glare of Hollywood, so her rare appearance in the West with Mark makes this a special occasion for all.

"When a pair of beyond-definition singers get together for a vocal jam session, expect an unusually enlightening evening of song. Both Winkler and Conklin move with deceptively casual ease from cabaret to standards to jazz. Toss in Winkler's always well-crafted originals and Conklin's convincing storytelling qualities, and a single set may well be too short." Don Heckman- Los Angeles Times

"If anyone tells you that there is a hipper gig than the pairing of Jazz vocalists Mark Winkler and Mary Foster Conklin, don't you believe it." Joe Lang-Jersey Jazz

"Their shows fit together with tongue-in-groove exactitude" Terry Teachout-Arts Journal/About Last Night

The Duplex Cabaret Theatre - CANCELLED

UPDATE: Stars have just not aligned this weekend. Due to circumstances beyond control and too many to name, MAKE YOUR OWN FUN is not happening Sunday night in New York. All tickets will be refunded.

Mary Foster Conklin, Amy Engelhardt and John DiPinto are thrilled to return to the Duplex to MAKE THEIR OWN FUN and yours. The “ladies" are sprung from different parts of New Jersey’s underbelly. Together with the "gentleman," this trio of natural storytellers invite you to join them for a drink, a laugh, and celebration of song. The evening will run the gamut from soulful solos to daring duos and maybe even a twisted trio or two. There could even be a uke number, who can say?

Amy Engelhardt spent 14 years in a lot of rental cars as the sole female writer/arranger and vocalist in Grammy-nominated, genre-busting vocal "band without instruments" The Bobs. Her solo CD, Not Gonna Be Pretty was hailed as the "unlikely and intriguing marriage of Nellie McKay and Meat Loaf." Amy's cheeky rock score for BASTARD JONES (developed with a NAMT grant, workshopped last fall and off-off-Bway in 2016) was a Top 10 Finalist for the Richard Rodgers Award, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Conference and the Alec Baldwin Fellowship (the strangest trifecta ever). Amy is also the creator and Artistic Producer of TUNE IN TIME, New York’s “Olympics of Musical Theatre," running monthly at the York. She currently splits her time between Los Angeles and New York. http://www.amyengelhardt.com

John DiPinto was musical director for I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking it On The Road as part of the York Theatre’s' MUFTI series. and musical director, arranger and orchestrator for the NYMF musical Trav’lin, featuring the songs of composer J.C. Johnson. Broadway musician credits include: Footloose, [title of show], and Victor/Victoria. Off-Broadway: A Christmas Memory, Disaster! The Musical, Langston in Harlem, Nor‘mal, Streakin'!, Summer Of '42, The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin. As an actor/singer John has appeared in Oil City Symphony, Pump Boys And Dinettes, Smoke On The Mountain, and A Day In Hollywood/A Night In The Ukraine. He and Mary Foster Conklin have appeared regularly in the Renegade Cabaret in its numerous spiffy venues: a lantern-lit balcony near the Highline, a fire escape on 14th Street, and a willow tree in the East Village. John is currently an Adjunct Professor at New Jersey City University, and works as a musical director for NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing program. He has composed original music for the University of Pennsylvania’s Mask & Wig shows and the children’s show KId Power And The Planet Protectors.

NIGHT IN THE CITY

LIFE IS A BITCH
Celebrating the poetry and lyrics of Fran Landesman
with John diMartino - piano and Marco Panascia - bass
LIFE IS A BITCH is a collection of songs by Fran Landesman, the self-proclaimed "poet laureate of lovers and losers," best remembered as the lyricist of The Nervous Set, the world's first (and only) beatnik musical, which premiered in St. Louis in 1959 and later flopped on Broadway. Two numbers from the show, "All the Sad Young Men" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" were widely recorded and became jazz standards. The evening will consist of a musical assortment of Landesman collaborators, including Tommy Wolf, Alec Wilder, Bob Dorough, Roy Kral, Simon Wallace and John Simon, with a special nod to past singers who were champions of Fran's songs, like Jackie and Roy and Susannah McCorkle.

EJDECKER produces an annual concert honoring the victims of 9/11. As much spiritual event as concert, since 2005 The Heart of Jazz has offered NYC's jazz community a locale to gather, to mourn and look forward in peace --- a place to explore the impact of the WTC attacks on themselves, their musical family and their fellow NYers --- through the healing qualities of the music. I will participate, kicking off the evening at 6pm with over 30 other jazz musicians.

LIFE IS A BITCH - a celebration of lyricist & poet Fran Landesman

12.06.12 |7pm

New York, NY USA

Urban Stages presents Winter Rhythms - two-weeks of performances by the crème de la crème of Cabaret, Classical, Jazz, Broadway and Hip Hop. All proceeds go to Urban Stages’ Outreach Program, helping to bring arts in education to schools and libraries in the New York area.

On December 6, Mary Foster Conklin presents LIFE IS A BITCH - A celebration of songs by Fran Landesman, the self-proclaimed "poet laureate of lovers and losers," best remembered as the lyricist of The Nervous Set, the world's first (and only) beatnik musical, which premiered in St. Louis in 1959 and later flopped on Broadway. Two numbers from the show, "All the Sad Young Men" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" were widely recorded and became jazz standards. The evening will be a feast of Landesman collaborators, including Tommy Wolf, Alec Wilder, Bob Dorough, Roy Kral, Simon Wallace and John Simon, with a special nod to past singers who were champions of Fran's songs, like Jackie and Roy and Susannah McCorkle. With John diMartino on piano, Marco Panascia on bass and special vocal guest John diPinto

'"When a pair of beyond-definition singers get together for a vocal jam session, expect an unusually enlightening evening of song.

"It is such a joy to experience two pros in action! Mary & Mark were completely satisfying and extraordinarily entertaining." Kathleen France,
Nightlife Exchange

Mark and Mary will once again join forces to do an evening of the old and new. Mark will be doing tunes from his CD Sweet Spot which was just named as one of the top 5 Jazz Vocal CDs of the Year by Jazz Times Magazine, as well as lots of new songs, and Mary will undoubtedly uncover the "sweet spot" in a great American songbook gem or two… and you can bet there will be a Bobby Troup and Matt Dennis tune in the mix as well.

The two vocalists met over their love of Bobby Troup and Matt Dennis and have been singing together in NY and Los Angeles for the last few years. Mary being a true New Yorker is loathe to leave the chaos of Manhattan, so her LA visits are always special occasions.

They will be joined by the wonderful Peter Smith on piano, Tim Emmons on bass and Peter Buck on Drums.
