LIFE IS A BITCH
Celebrating the poetry and lyrics of Fran Landesman

LIFE IS A BITCH is a collection of songs by Fran Landesman, the self-proclaimed "poet laureate of lovers and losers," best remembered as the lyricist of The Nervous Set, the world's first (and only) beatnik musical, which premiered in St. Louis in 1959 and later flopped on Broadway. Two numbers from the show, "All the Sad Young Men" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" were widely recorded and became jazz standards. The evening will consist of a musical assortment of Landesman collaborators, including Tommy Wolf, Alec Wilder, Bob Dorough, Roy Kral, Simon Wallace and John Simon, with a special nod to past singers who were champions of Fran's songs, like Jackie and Roy and Susannah McCorkle.

'"When a pair of beyond-definition singers get together for a vocal jam session, expect an unusually enlightening evening of song. Both Winkler and Conklin move with deceptively casual ease from cabaret to standards to jazz. Toss in Winkler's always well-crafted originals and Conklin's convincing storytelling qualities, and a single set may well be too short." Don Heckman- Los Angeles Times

"If anyone tells you that there is a hipper gig than the pairing of Jazz vocalists Mark Winkler and Mary Foster Conklin, don't you believe it." Joe Lang-Jersey Jazz

"It is such a joy to experience two pros in action! Mary & Mark were completely satisfying and extraordinarily entertaining." Kathleen France,
Nightlife Exchange

Mark and Mary will once again join forces to do an evening of the old and new. Mark will be doing tunes from his CD Sweet Spot which was just named as one of the top 5 Jazz Vocal CDs of the Year by Jazz Times Magazine, as well as lots of new songs, and Mary will undoubtedly uncover the "sweet spot" in a great American songbook gem or two… and you can bet there will be a Bobby Troup and Matt Dennis tune in the mix as well.

The two vocalists met over their love of Bobby Troup and Matt Dennis and have been singing together in NY and Los Angeles for the last few years. Mary being a true New Yorker is loathe to leave the chaos of Manhattan, so her LA visits are always special occasions.

They will be joined by the wonderful Peter Smith on piano, Tim Emmons on bass and Peter Buck on Drums.
